These resources are now owned and operated by Child Health BC who is making them freely available to parents, caregivers, families and anyone supporting healthy child development in the early years.

Emotional Response to a New Baby

Loving a new baby can be complex. New parents may be ambivalent, especially if the child reminds them of a family member for whom they have mixed feelings. Some mothers may be suffering from post-partum depression and reject their baby immediately after birth.

Rejection can have adverse implications for the emotional, mental, and physical development of a child. Research has shown that having a consistent caregiver leads to a much healthier outcome.
