Dr. Joanna Cheek, a Psychiatrist with Vancouver Island Health Authority and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia, specializes in individual and group psychotherapy. She practices psychoeducation, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based interventions, dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and psychodynamic therapy.
Dr. Cheek’s interests include stigma reduction and making psychotherapy and psychosocial wellness strategies more accessible and operational in our communities.
In her efforts to make psychotherapy and mindfulness more accessible, Dr. Cheek has co-created mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy programs, in addition to a post-partum mindfulness program in Victoria, BC.
Dr. Cheek often works with expecting and postpartum parents in addition to working with people struggling with trauma and complicated mood, anxiety, and personality disorders.
Dr. Cheek’s commitment to community can be seen in the TV Talk Show she did with KidCareCanada on the topic: “Anxiety in New Parents”. Dr. Cheek also makes herself available to advise us. In our “ABC’s for New Parents” book, Dr. Cheek who wrote the section on “Trauma”. It has received commendations from other health professionals and practitioners working from a trauma-informed approach.
