The Myth of Motherhood

There is a myth in our society that all mothers must feel joyous towards their infants at all times.  This social pressure can have a negative impact on a new mother who may feel guilty about her sadness, harshly judge herself and her parenting skills and engage in negative self-talk. The reality is that feeling sad from time to time, or wanting a break from being with your baby is normal. Friends and family members can help the mother through empathy, understanding and support, and by avoiding criticism, judgment or comparisons with other parents. This is especially true for women dealing with postpartum depression.
